The informal meeting of defence ministers has been a well-established event on the EU calendar for many years. One of its functions is to prepare the formal meeting of defence ministers in Brussels in November 2020. Due to the informal/confidential character of the events, defence ministers have the rare opportunity to enter into a direct exchange on current foreign and security policy developments across the globe. In addition, the next steps in developing the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy are discussed and prepared. The informal meeting of EU defence ministers takes place around the same time as the informal meeting of foreign ministers, known as the Gymnich meeting (27-28 August 2020).
