In the context of the cultural programme accompanying the German Presidency of the Council of the EU 2020, the Goethe-Institut will create public interactive installations to commemorate Europe’s diversity of languages and ideas. “The Disappearing Wall” installation is based on an idea proposed by Maria Yablonina in a workshop carried out by the architect and engineer Werner Sobek. In Madrid, the installation will be on display from 6-8 November at the Naves Matadero cultural centre. The opening on 6 November at 11.00. will be attended by the Spanish Minister of Culture, Mr Rodríguez Uribes, and the German Ambassador, Mr Wolfgang Dold. The “wall” consists of a plexiglas frame into which around 6,000 wooden blocks inscribed with original and translated quotes have been inserted. These quotes were collected in the spring by local contests in Europe initiated by the Goethe-Institut.
