The digital transformation and the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) can bring solutions for many societal challenges. Expected benefits include improvements in the area of personal healthcare, smarter transport services, more efficient manufacturing, and optimisation of energy usage. In light of the German Presidency of the Council of the EU, we want to focus on the added value of multidisciplinary research and innovation activities in this field. How can we avoid working in silos and overcome the limits of current digital technologies in terms of capacity, speed and energy consumption?
