The Federal Foreign Office is hosting an international conference on the protection of cultural heritage and multilateralism on the occasion of Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Germany’s chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and the 50th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention of 1970 on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. The conference will examine challenges, successes, synergies and strategies with respect to the multilateral protection of cultural heritage. The future of the protection of cultural heritage and the role of culture as an important basis for multilateralism in the 21st century will be discussed in dialogue with the EU, the Council of Europe, UNESCO, the member states and representatives from academia and civil society.
