Several things make it very difficult to detect multiple identities – entered by mistake or deliberately – in EU information systems, when trying to identify false identities or to use data effectively for criminal prosecution purposes. This has led European legislators to adopt two regulations in 2019 to ensure the interoperability of information systems, thereby improving technical and operational connections between these systems. The aim of this initiative is to combine core biographical and biometric data in a single identity database, allowing information to be systematically checked against data in other systems. The conference is intended to assess the status of implementation so far and to look at potential action on further steps.
