In November 2020, it will be 70 years since the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was signed. This anniversary falls within Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the EU; Germany further assumes the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in November 2020. To mark this and International Human Rights Day on 10 December, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht will open a conference co-organised by the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection in coordination with the German Institute for Human Rights. The event will examine issues including the coherent pan-European protection of human rights by the EU and the Council of Europe, the importance of the ECHR for democracy and the rule of law in Germany and Europe, current challenges and its role in the German legal system. Panel discussions with senior figures from German and European institutions are planned.
