Starting today, Europeans can find out more about the various activities on the Goethe-Institut’s website www.goethe.de/eu2020.
Whether cultural encounters in private homes, discussions about dealing with artificial intelligence, conversations between the generations of Europe, or a touchable installation on city squares – the projects the Goethe-Institut is implementing for Germany’s Presidency are designed to make Europe tangible.
The projects are part of the Federal Government’s cultural programme for the German Presidency of the Council of the EU. This programme deliberately follows an innovative approach: it is European, because a common culture is best created when working on the future together. It is digital, because the European public sphere has long since become inconceivable without the digital space. It gives young people a voice, because only with the young generation can the European future be shaped.
‘European Kitchen’
The kitchen, more than anywhere else, stands for community, encounters and hospitality. In the ‘European Kitchen’ project, the kitchen becomes a platform for a Europe-wide dialogue. Readings, concerts, performances, lectures – in ten EU Member States, artists living in Europe will be organising physical or virtual encounters with citizens from a city other than their own hometown. The events will be digitally recorded and streamed.
‘Generation A = Algorithm’
Big data, algorithms, biotech – how is artificial intelligence (AI) changing Europeans’ everyday life? And how can this development be influenced in a socially responsible way? Generation A explores these questions at climate hackathons, in AI residencies, in the online discussion series “Couch Lessons”, robots-in-residence and other diverse formats. The focus is on aspects such as work, creativity, ethics and climate change.
‘#oekoropa’
How will we travel in Europe in the future? In this youth competition, European pupils between 16 and 19 years of age will look for answers to this question. Prizes will go to the ten best ideas for climate-friendly travel between the three capitals of the Trio Presidency (Berlin, Lisbon, Ljubljana) and their hometowns. The winning teams can begin their journeys in spring 2021. The closing date for entries is 1 October 2020.
‘Tell me about Europe'
Ten discussions between old and young people in ten European countries. The goal is a cross-generational exchange about Europe, its past and its future. The basis of the talks is interviews with contemporary witnesses, born before 1945, who were public figures and influenced European discourses. They are collected in the ‘European 'Archive of Voices’: Digital and audio formats are planned to accompany the events.
‘The Disappearing Wall’
A wall is created in a public space, citizens become active, an interactive installation brings Europe’s diversity to life. In the end, the wall has disappeared – just like the borders and mental barriers in Europe.
