Livestream: Chancellor Merkel speaks before the European Parliament

On Wednesday, 8 July, German Chancellor Angela Merkel travelled abroad for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the early afternoon she will present the priorities of Germany's Council Presidency to the European Parliament in Brussels.

Before her appearance in the European Parliament, Chancellor Merkel met with the President of the European Parliament, David Maria Sassoli. Here, too, the topic at hand was Germany's Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Beginning at 14.15, the Chancellor will speak for about 10-15 minutes in the plenary hall about Germany's Presidency of the Council of the EU. She will be followed by the leaders of the European Parliament's parliamentary groups, which will likely include German MEPs such as Manfred Weber (CSU, EPP), Ska Keller (Greens, Greens/EFA), Martin Schirdewan (Left, GUE/NGL) and Jörg Meuthen (AfD, ID).

After her speech, Chancellor Merkel will meet the President of the European Parliament, David Maria Sassoli, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, at the invitation of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

She will also have a bilateral meeting with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
